COLUMBIA, Mo. - Weapons at the skill positions are essential for a successful offensive attack in the SEC, but the glue that binds every great offense is a physical group of big men who win the battles in the trenches every game. Coach Glen Elarbee has his Mizzou offensive line unit clicking on all cylinders as the regular season approaches. Tomorrow evening, the O-Line has a chance to get out on the field and play their physical style of football up front as the Tigers hold their second scrimmage of camp.
"We need to continue to play with tempo and effort, that's our biggest thing," Elarbee said. "If you play hard every single snap, good things will happen. I feel like we are close to that goal, and hopefully we will carry that momentum into the scrimmage tomorrow. Lastly, we just need to clean up the little mistakes like penalties, wrong aiming points and things like that. If we get those little things fixed before week one, we're going to be in good shape."
Mizzou returns every member of the reigning top-ranked offensive line in conference last season. The unit only allowed 14 total sacks last year and paved the way for a 3,000-yard passer as well as a 1,000-yard rusher and receiver. Junior right tackle Paul Adams feels that the key to improvement this season is the new mentality of the group.
"Coach Elarbee preaches to us every single day to be nasty," Adams said. "I don't think there has been a day in camp where we haven't gotten a little bit too physical with a defensive lineman or linebacker. That's just the mentality that we have. We aren't going to back down from anything, which is something that we struggled with at times last year. I think youth was a big factor in that and now a year later we are more comfortable and trust in the system a lot more. We come to the line of scrimmage with the attitude that any play could be the one that breaks the game open for us. So we are definitely trying to carry that mindset and swagger into our opener against Missouri State in a few weeks."
As for tomorrow night, Adams and his unit will look to gain comfortability with their individual blocks and all the different defensive looks they'll be seeing this season as opposing teams aim to slow down the most explosive offensive in the SEC.
"The biggest key for us as a unit tomorrow is going to be knowing our assignments," Adams said. "It's huge for everyone to know what's happening on blitz packages, different defensive looks and just the ins and outs of our game. One thing I know for sure is that we'll continue to be nasty and play through the whistle."
