COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Football began week three of #MIZCAMP17 on the Kadlec Practice Fields. The main focus of the team during week three shifted towards analyzing Saturday's scrimmage, the first of fall camp, and making adjustments while continuing to improve. After 160 snaps in a wide variety of situations during the scrimmage, head coach Barry Odom felt pleased with his team's effort, calling the scrimmage a good test for the players as Mizzou continues to prepare for the start of the 2017 season.
"We had a really productive weekend," Odom said. "They did a good job. It carried a little longer, but we came out injury free, so that's the most important thing. It was fun to see, today [Monday], the corrections we made defensively [on Saturday], we were able to make them out on the field today and light a fire. We're getting a lot better. It's going to be exciting to see where we'll get at the end of this week. We're going to take a lot of strides, just like we did last week, but we have a lot better yet to get."
The scrimmage provided a chance for the players to impress the coaching staff, by implementing the lessons from the first few weeks of camp while also giving the coaches a glimpse into the off-season strides made by some of the returning players.
"I thought Drew Lock did a really nice job of getting guys in the right position a couple of times," Odom said. "He took control of that, which was really nice to see. [Terry] Beckner did a couple of really nice things defensively, Cale Garrett did some nice things also, defensively. We've got a lot of playmakers and they consistently caught the football, which was really fun to see."
"My confidence on the defensive end is high," defensive line coach Brick Haley said. "We've got enough bodies to find a few guys to get us some help, maybe some younger guys. Frank [Agbasimere] had a good week last week, then had a great scrimmage on Saturday. I tell the guys all the time, I don't make the depth chart every week, they do. It's all based on performance."
Agbasimere is starting to feel more comfortable coming off the edge. In his fourth year of football and third at Mizzou, the athletic Agbasimere said he was excited for the chance to play on D-Line ZOU.
"It was a little bit different, putting your hands in the dirt, doing different drills," Agbasimere said. "Coach Haley made sure I learned everything, like the whole position of the D-Line. He made sure that I knew what the man next to me was doing, to make it easier for myself. The scrimmage was my first action on the d-line, so, it was a little bit shaky, but it was still good. You play as you practice. I practice hard, so I went out there and played hard. I tell myself, have fun with the game and the rest is going to take care of itself."
The team will look to continue to get better through this week of practice heading into the second scrimmage of fall camp this Saturday.
