Monday morning marked new beginnings for Mizzou Football as head coach Barry Odom's squad opened its fall camp at the Kadlec Practice Fields. Mizzou launched the 2017 campaign with an intense opening practice as both the offense and defense traded big moments.
With its array of explosive weapons, the offensive unit spread the wealth and piled up yards efficiently in a variety of ways both on the ground and through the air. Meanwhile, the defense applied pressure up front and responded with multiple interceptions as Mizzou's ballhawking secondary made great reads and came away with timely turnovers.
For Mizzou's group of 20 seasoned seniors, the final opening day of fall camp brought excitement for different reasons. A healthy Ish Witter (Tampa, Fla.) relished the opportunity to get back on the field after being sidelined all spring with a shoulder injury. The shifty running back picked up where he left off last fall, rattling off multiple big-gain rushes and hauling in passes out of the backfield on multiple occasions Monday.
"It feels great to be back on the field," Witter said. "I know it's going to be a great season for us and I'm excited. Camp gives us time to bond even more than we already have and just get better every day as a team."

Senior wide receiver J'Mon Moore (Missouri City, Texas) returns to highlight Mizzou's deep and versatile receiving corps. For Moore, the start of camp provides a chance for him to lead his team by example and he set the tone on day one of fall camp.
"Camp is finally here and it was a fun day just flying around and putting in some great reps with my teammates," Moore said. "It's on me to practice everything I preach and I'm honored to be in a position to lead the younger guys and help them in any I can. I can't wait to get back out there for day two."

Entering camp, senior safety Anthony Sherrils (Kansas City, Mo.) and the defense are determined to focus on improving each day by honing in on all the details and communicating every play.
"It was a great start to camp and I want to take advantage of getting better with a ton of reps," Sherrils said. "The coaches put us in a position during camp to stay in on downs when you're tired and when it gets difficult, that's the best time to focus on the details and fundamentals."
Sherrils shined in the secondary on Monday, highlighting the practice with an acrobatic interception near the end of the session. Sherrils teamed up with junior linebacker Kaleb Prewett to pull off the impressive pick. The pass glanced off Prewett, who was applying tight coverage, and Sherrils darted in at full speed and corralled the tipped ball for the interception.
With a successful day one under its belt, Mizzou's experienced squad returns to the practice fields Tuesday for day two of Fall Camp at 9 a.m.
