INDIANAPOLIS – Mizzou alumni Carly Kan (Honolulu) and Lauren Reedy (Rochester Hills, Mich.) were selected as nominees for the 2017 National Collegiate Athletic Association Woman of the Year award, announced Tuesday (June 27) by the organization's office.
A record 543 female collegiate student-athletes were nominated by NCAA member schools for this year's Woman of the Year award. For the complete list of 2017 nominees, visit NCAA.org.
Kan concluded her fantastic career with Mizzou Volleyball this past fall, solidifying herself as one of the top individual players in program history. She was a three-time AVCA All-American and All-SEC honoree, the Tigers' first-ever four-time AVCA All-Region recipient and a two-time SEC Champion.
Statistically, Kan's 1,677 career kills (second), 1,905 points (third), 4,392 attacks (fourth) and 1,445 digs (fourth) all rank top 5 individually in Mizzou Volleyball history. She's also only one of five Tigers ever with 1,000 career kills, digs and points.
Reedy, the 2017 SEC Female Diver of the year, concluded her Tigers career at the 2017 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships. At the meet, she earned All-America honorable mention honors on both 1-meter and 3-meter with ninth-place finishes. Reedy also claimed the SEC 1-meter crown this past season and garnered honorable mention accolades as a junior in 2015.
She concluded her career as Mizzou's record holder on both springboards. Reedy also earned a spot on the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Women's At-Large Third Team.
Established in 1991 and now in its 27th year, the NCAA Woman of the Year award honors graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
Kan and Reedy were among 229 total nominees across NCAA Division I schools. The NCAA encourages member schools to honor their top graduating female student-athletes each year by submitting their names for consideration for the Woman of the Year award.
The Mizzou duo will next be in consideration as conferences across the country select up to two conference nominees each from the pool of school nominees. The Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will then choose the top 30 honorees - 10 from each division.
From the top 30, the selection committee determines the top three honorees from each division and announces the nine finalists in September. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then chooses the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year from those nine. The final winner will be announced at the annual award ceremony on Oct. 22 in Indianapolis.
