- Mizzou Baseball opens its final homestand of 2017, a four-game stint, with an SEC East series against South Carolina this weekend at Taylor Stadium. The series begins Friday at 6:30 p.m. while Saturday's senior day game will start at 2 p.m. Sunday's game features a 1 p.m. first pitch on Mother's Day. All three games are set to air on SEC Network+ and KTGR in the Mid-Missouri area.
- Mizzou will honor its lone senior, OF Kirby McGuire, Saturday as part of its annual senior day festivities. McGuire has played the last two seasons at Mizzou after transferring from McLennan Community College. McGuire is enjoying a breakout senior season as he has been one of the best stories on the team over the last month. Since being inserted into the starting lineup for the Georgia series on April 6, McGuire has been red hot for Steve Bieser and his staff. He has hit a team-best .313 during 20 games in that time, reaching base at a team-best .429 clip as well. He has stolen a team-best eight bases in that span and scored 13 runs, third on the team. His seven multi-hit games during those 20 contests are also the most on the team. McGuire also leads the team in batting and OBP in league games this season.
- In his career, McGuire is a .261 career hitter and has driven in 18 runs with three homers and 11 doubles while scoring 38 times. He has stolen 10 bases in his career. Enjoying a breakout senior campaign, McGuire is hitting .295 while
- reaching base at a .410 clip, both career-best marks.
Mizzou is coming off of a series loss at Vanderbilt last weekend, dropping the Friday and Sunday contests while earning a 2-1, 12-inning win on Saturday thanks to incredible pitching from Tanner Houck and T.J. Sikkema. South Carolina lost two of three against LSU last weekend in Columbia East before winning two games midweek. - This weekend's series with South Carolina will mark Mizzou Baseball's annual 'Hometown Heroes' weekend, presented by Veteran's United. Mizzou will honor local hometown heroes, including police officers, firemen and women, EMTs and armed service enlistees before each game this weekend. Friday's game will be the third and final firework presentation at Taylor Stadium. Fans can expect a long postgame firework show shortly after the completion of Friday's game. Sunday is Mizzou's Family Funday with base running and autographs available to fans following the game.
- First year Mizzou head coach Steve Bieser is switching up the weekend rotation this weekend. Freshman LHP T.J. Sikkema will get the nod Friday night in his first career start. Junior RHP ace Tanner Houck is slated to get the ball Saturday. Mizzou will throw another junior righty Bryce Montes De Oca in the Sunday finale.
- Last year vs. South Carolina, Houck lost his start with the Gamecocks after firing 6.0 innings, scattering six hits and three runs (two earned) with five strikeouts and two walks. He was tagged for a pair of doubles among the five hits he allowed. He was given just one run of support in that start, which has been an issue this year for Mizzou. In fact, in 12 starts, Houck has received an average of just 2.8 runs per game from the Mizzou offense. In SEC play, Mizzou has given him just 1.75 runs of support per game. In his career vs. the Gamecocks, Houck is 0-1 with a 2.00 ERA in 14.0 innings pitched, allowing 13 hits, four earned runs with 13 strikeouts and just two walks.
- Montes De Oca has just one career appearance vs. the Gamecocks and that came his freshman year in 2015. He has just 0.1 innings against SC, allowing an unearned run with a walk and a strikeout.
- Friday will obviously be Sikkema's first career outing against South Carolina.
