Koelling will represent the United States in Finland at the Junior World Championships
LAS VEGAS – Mizzou Wrestling freshman and Missouri Wrestling Foundation grappler Wyatt Koelling (Kaysville, Ut.) provided the biggest victory of his young career on Thursday, winning the junior Greco Roman 84 kg bracket at the U.S. Open in Las Vegas to earn a spot on the Team USA junior world team. Koelling will now represent his country in Finland at the Junior World Championships in August. Koelling was one of seven current or former Mizzou wrestlers to compete in the U.S. Open, as 125 kg men's freestyle wrestler Dom Bradley (Blue Springs, Mo.) and 57 kg men's freestyle wrestler Alan Waters (Kansas City, Mo.) also placed, finishing third and sixth, respectively.
Koelling breezed through his competition in way to three technical falls in the first three rounds, winning by a combined score of 31-6. His opening bout was the only match that went to the second period, as he won 9-0 in 2:33 over Chauncey Garigan (Inland Northwest Wrestling Training Center) in the quarterfinals and 8-0 in 0:37 over Austin Chaon (NMO-OTS) in the semifinals. In the finals, Koelling defeated Thomas Brackett (West Tennessee Takedown Club) by the score of 2-0.
Bradley, wrestling for Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club, won by technical fall in both of his opening bouts before falling to two-time NCAA Champion Nick Gwiazdowski (Titan Mercury), 6-4, in the semifinals. Bradley then bounced back to defeat Justin Grant (NYAC) and Bobby Telford (TMWC) en route to a third place finish.
Waters won his three matches before dropping his next three to finish sixth. The two-time All-American posted two technical falls in the tournament, including a 10-0 win in 0:51 over Martin Gevorkian (ELAC) in the second round.
Also competing in Las Vegas was current Tigers redshirt freshman Jaydin Eierman (Columbia, Mo.) and freshman Canten Marriott (Excelsior Springs, Mo.), as well as Mizzou alum Le'Roy Barnes (Belton, Mo.) and Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.). Eierman, Barnes and Mayes competed in the men's freestyle division, while Marriott wrestled in the junior freestyle division. Eierman went 2-2 at the tournament, while Barnes, Mayes and Marriott all went 1-2.
