Mizzou records six top-five finishes on last day of competition
DES MOINES, IOWA – Senior LaQuisha Jackson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) captured the third white flag for Mizzou Track & Field in as many days, winning the 100m dash at the Drake Relays on Saturday. On the final day of competition, Mizzou recorded six top-five placings, capping an impressive performance despite cold and rainy weather all weekend.
After clocking in the sixth-fastest 100m dash time in the preliminary round yesterday, Jackson blazed past the competition on Saturday, winning the event with a season-best time of 11.65. She finished just ahead of teammate sophomore Maya Cody (St. Louis, Mo.), who finished third with a time of 11.77. Jackson joined redshirt senior Drew White (Crystal City, Mo.) and senior Reinhard Van Zyl (Hoedspruit, South Africa) as Drake Relays Champions, with White winning the 10,000m run on Thursday and Van Zyl winning the javelin on Friday.
"We fought hard all weekend through very tough conditions," said head coach Brett Halter. "The Drake Relays have been a staple for Mizzou dating back to the early 1900's. We honored that tradition by winning three events this weekend. The type of fight we saw across the board is a testament to the leadership that has developed on our team this year. Battling adverse conditions and doing so with a positive growth mindset will set us up well for the upcoming SEC Championships. I am very proud of our team and look forward to what we can accomplish in two weeks."
Senior Valerie Thames (Milwaukee, Wis.) and redshirt junior Cain Winebrenner (Kansas City, Mo.) each finished fourth in their respective events. Thames posted a time of 13.50 in the 100m hurdles, while Winebrenner crossed the finish line with a time of 1:54.49 in the 800m run. Winebrenner led the race for over half of the last leg before falling back to fourth place. In the 3000m steeplechase, senior Teylar Adelsberger (O'Fallon, Mo.) finished fifth, finishing at 10:30.27.
In field events, Mizzou received a pair of top-eight finishes from redshirt sophomore Gabi Jacobs (Bloomington, Ill.) in the shot put and redshirt freshman Patrick Kunza (Wentzville, Mo.) in the hammer throw. Jacobs finished fifth with a mark of 14.82m (48-7.5), while Kunza placed eighth with a throw of 58.32m (191-4).
Mizzou now enters postseason competition, beginning with the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships, May 11-13 in Columbia, South Carolina. The conference meet will be the final meet to post top-48 qualifying marks for the NCAA West regional, which will be held May 25-27 in Austin, Texas.
