Tiger bats cooled in series opener
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball lost its series opener in game one of a doubleheader with Texas A&M, 11-1, Friday afternoon at Taylor Stadium. Texas A&M jumped all over Mizzou starter Cole Bartlett (Williamsburg, Ind.), scoring three in the first inning while handing Bartlett his first loss since April 22 of last year, a span of 23 straight appearances without a loss for him. He is now 5-1 on the year while Mizzou falls to 27-16 on the year and 8-11 in SEC play. Texas A&M improves to 30-13 and 11-8 in league play. RHP Brigham Hill earned the win to improve to 6-3 on the year.
Texas A&M got to Bartlett early as a leadoff walk and a triple by Logan Foster led to the game's first run. Foster then scored on an RBI groundout to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Mizzou got a leadoff single from Connor Brumfield (Columbia, Mo.) during its half of the first. He stole a base in the frame as well but Mizzou couldn't knock him in as the Aggies led 3-0 after one.
A&M added another run in the fourth inning, stringing together three straight two-out hits to plate a run. The Aggies took advantage of two errors and a hit batter to break the game open in the top of the fifth inning, scoring three unearned runs in the inning to take a 7-0 lead.
The Aggies hung another crooked number in the top of the seventh, again taking advantage of an error and a two-run homer from George Janca, scoring four in the frame for an 11-0 lead. Mizzou struggled to solve Hill as he pitched through 7.0 shutout innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Senior Kirby McGuire (Round Rock, Texas) got Mizzou on the board in the eighth inning with a two-out, RBI single into left center. That was Mizzou's only run in the game.
