Mizzou Football (1-5 overall) returns home after nearly one month between home games, as it will play host to the Idaho Vandals (2-4) Saturday at Faurot Field/Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 11:00 a.m. (CT), with the SEC Network on the telecast.
- Mizzou is coming off a 53-28 defeat at fourth-ranked Georgia last Saturday to drop its fifth-straight game since opening the season with a win over Missouri State. The Tigers went toe-to-toe with the Bulldogs in the first half thanks to an interception by LB Cale Garrett and three first-half touchdown passes by QB Drew Lock. The Tigers had the game tied at 21-all after Lock and WR Emanuel Hall connected for their second 63-yard touchdown pass of the night with 11:34 left in the second quarter. Unfortunately for Mizzou, Georgia took control from there, and scored 26 unanswered points to make it 47-21 into the fourth quarter. Lock would toss his fourth TD of the game early in the final period, but it wasn't enough, as UGA outgained Mizzou by a 696-to-312 margin in total offense, while the Bulldog defense limited MU to just 59 yards rushing on the night.
- Idaho makes its first trip to Columbia since 1963 having dropped two straight, and four of its last five overall. Last Saturday, the Vandals suffered a tough defeat, as they led at home against Appalachian State by a 20-0 score into the third quarter, only to see the Mountaineers score 23 unanswered points to post a 23-20 win. Idaho QB Matt Linehan completed 15-of-28 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns, while RB Aaron Duckworth led the ground game with 113 rushing yards on 21 carries in a losing effort. The previous week saw Idaho drop a 21-16 game at home to Louisiana where is was throwing into the end zone in the final minutes with a chance to win. Idaho opened its 2017 season with a home win over Sacramento State (W, 28-6), and also claimed a 29-23 win in double overtime on the road at South Alabama in week four. In between those victories was a home loss in week two to UNLV (L, 44-16), followed by a competitive road defeat at Western Michigan (L, 37-28).
Homecoming History
- Legend says that the Homecoming tradition got its start at the University of Missouri in 1911, thanks to the vision and efforts of Chester L. Brewer, MU's Director of Athletics at the time. Although Illinois staged a similar celebration in 1910, Missouri claims its 1911 effort as one of the first formal Homecoming celebrations surrounding a football game.
- That year, the Missouri-Kansas game was to be played on a college campus for the first time ever. Previously, the game had been played in either Kansas City or St. Joseph, and Mizzou trailed in the series by a 12-5-3 count at the time.
- Brewer wanted to add some spice to the season-ending game in Columbia, so he issued a plea to Mizzou alumni and especially to former Tiger football players to "Come Home" for the game. They did just that, with a record crowd of 9,000 overflowing old Rollins Field.
- With four minutes to play, and MU trailing by three, Tiger captain Glen Shuck booted a tying field goal from a difficult angle. Then, little Billy Blees caught a rampaging KU fullback in the open field in the final seconds to preserve the tie, and was carried off the field a hero. Hence, "Homecoming" was born.
- Mizzou has won 10 of its last 15 Homecoming games, including a landmark 36-27 win over BCS #1-ranked Oklahoma in 2010 (36-27). The Tigers also got their first-ever SEC win in the 2012 Homecoming tilt against Kentucky (a 33-10 Tiger victory). Mizzou lost last year's Homecoming tilt to Middle Tennessee, 51-48.
Locked in Lately
- Junior QB Drew Lock is putting together a nice streak of games over the last three contests as he has helped Mizzou's aerial assault regain its footing during that span. He is coming off of what is possibly his best game ever against an SEC team last week at No. 4 Georgia. Lock completed 15-of-25 passes for 253 yards and four TDs, good for a 189.81 QB rating, his best ever in an SEC game. His four TD tosses were also his most in an SEC game. Keep in mind he did all of that against a Georgia defense that had allowed just three passing TDs all year entering the game and had allowed 17 total points in SEC play.
- Over his last three games, Lock is 60-for-106 (56.6 percent) for 824 yards and eight touchdowns with two of those three games coming against top-10 opponents in No. 10 Auburn (Sept. 23) and at last week at No. 4 Georgia. He has also added a rushing TD in that span, giving him nine total TDs responsible for over the last three contests.
- Lock moved into sole possession of fourth place all-time in career TD pass last week at Georgia. His four TD tosses moved his career total to 44, passing fourth-place Blaine Gabbert, who had 40 from 2008-10. Lock has a ways to go to catch third-place James Franklin, who had 51 from 2010-13. After that he will set his sights on Mizzou legend Brad Smith, who had 56 from 2002-05. Chase Daniel (2005-08) is Mizzou's all-time career TD lead with 101 career TD passes.
In it For the Long Hall
- Junior WR Emanuel Hall has been lighting up the SEC since earning a spot in Mizzou's starting lineup at Kentucky on Oct. 7. In his two games since moving into the starting lineup, all that Hall has done is catch TDs while extending the field vertically. He has eight catches for 270 yards (33.8 avg.) and three TDs, all of 58 yards or longer, including a pair of 63-yard bombs last weekend at Georgia.
- On the year, Hall is averaging 28.77 yards per catch, the nation's top mark.
- Hall is coming off of a four-catch, 141-yard, two-touchdown outing at Georgia last week. His 141 yards and two scores are both career-highs.
- He has tallied back-to-back 100-yard games for the first time in his career after going for 129 at Kentucky and 141 yards at Georgia.
