#23 Missouri State | Taylor Stadium | Tuesday, April 26 // 6 p.m. | Stats |
- Mizzou Baseball returns home this Tuesday to face in-state rival Missouri State in the final contest of its annual two-game series with the Bears. MSU took game one of the series on April 12, 16-1, behind an explosive offense that tallied 14 hits, three extra-base hits, six walks and three hit batters against eight different Mizzou pitchers.
- Mizzou will send sophomore RHP Ryan Lee (2-2, 4.50 ERA) to the mound for his second start of the year against the Bears. He started the April 12 contest and went 2.0 innings and took the loss after allowing two runs (both earned) on three hits with a pair of walks with three strikeouts. Tuesday will mark Lee's fourth start vs. in-state competition this season. In his previous three outings vs. in-state teams, Lee is 0-1 having pitched 10.2 innings, allowing 12 hits, eight runs (seven earned) with six walks and nine strikeouts. He owns a 5.91 ERA in those three starts.
- Missouri State will send LHP Andy Cheray (1-1, 5.82 ERA) to the mound for his fourth career start against Mizzou Tuesday. In his previous three starts against Mizzou, Cheray is 1-0 with a 5.84 ERA in 12.1 innings, scattering 16 hits and four walks while striking out 10 batters. Cheray started both games last season and went 5.1 innings, allowing eight earned runs in those 5.1 innings. His best career outing came in 2014 when he went 7.0 shutout innings, scattering just four hits with three walks and six strikeouts in a 9-0 MSU win at Hammons Field.
- Mizzou and Missouri State have met 51 times over the years with the Bears holding a 27-24 edge in the all-time series. Missouri State has won four of the last five meetings with Mizzou, winning both meetings a year ago and winning earlier this season at Hammons Field, 16-1. Mizzou last defeated Missouri State at home in 2014 when Mizzou pounded out 15 hits in a 9-4 win on April 8, 2014. Mizzou had six extra-base hits in that game, including three doubles from 2B Shane Segovia.
- With Mizzou playing Missouri State every year in a two-game, home-and-home series, there are obviously some Tigers with impressive numbers against the Bears. Below is a look.
- OF Trey Harris - .333 | 4R | 2B | HR | RBI | SB
- SS Ryan Howard - .385 | 2R | 2 RBI | SB
- 1B Zach Lavy - .333 | 2R | 2 2B | HR | 3 RBI
- CF Jake Ring - .273 | 3R | 2B | 3B | 2 BB
- Mizzou senior 1B Zach Lavy has put together a tremendous offensive season through the first 10 weeks of the season and has arguably been the top offensive first baseman in the SEC this season. Lavy leads the SEC with 27 extra-base hits and leads the SEC in both doubles (16) and triples (seven) while ranking third in total bases and fourth in slugging percentage. His 16 doubles are the most at Mizzou since Jonah Schmidt had 17 in 2011 (58 games) and his 27 extra-base hits are the most at Mizzou since Aaron Senne in 2010, the year he was Big 12 Player of the Year. Lavy is also fourth in the SEC in hit-by-pitch, first in defensive chances, first in putouts and second in double plays as he has been tremendous on defense as well.
- In SEC games alone, Lavy is third in total bases and second in slugging percentage while ranking ninth in total hits. He also has seven doubles and five triples in SEC play, both of which are SEC-bests. No player in the SEC has combined for more doubles or triples in league games. He is also sixth in RBI and leads all first basemen in nearly every defensive category.
- Lavy is 17th nationally in doubles and leads the nation with his seven triples, which are the most at Mizzou since 1994.
