COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball (10-3) won the second game of the doubleheader against UIC (4-6), 10-5, on Saturday evening, giving senior LHP Austin Tribby his second win of the season. Tribby pitched 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts and three walks, giving up five hits and five earned runs.
Junior SS Ryan Howard improved his batting average to .358 on the season hitting 3-for-5 on the night with three singles and crossing the plate twice.
The game began with a leadoff walk, followed by a hit by pitch by Tribby. UIC drew first blood with a triple by Ricardo Ramirez that knocked in two runs. Tribby quickly shut down the Flames with two strikeouts and a pop out to short to end the inning.
The Mizzou bats came alive in the bottom of the first with a leadoff single to center by Connor Brumfield (Columbia, Mo.). Howard followed up with a single of his own, advancing Brumfield to second. Jake Ring reached base on balls to load the bags for Shane Benes (Town & Country, Mo.) who would launch a liner up the middle, driving in two runs, marking this his third consecutive game with an RBI. A liner to left by Brian Sharp (Liberty, Mo.) and a sac fly to right by Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) added two more, bringing Mizzou's run total to five for the inning.
Mizzou continued to dominate as they added another five runs in the fifth inning off a triple by Ring that knocked in two. With the bases loaded, Harris stepped up to the plate and smacked the ball to left field for a hard-hit double, driving in three. On the night Mizzou, hit .500 with runners in scoring position.
UIC threatened in the fifth and sixth innings with a solo home run by Ramirez and an RBI single to left center by Cronin, respectively.
Cole Bartlett (Williamsburg, Ind.) relieved Tribby in the fifth and finished the night with one strikeout, no walks and just two hits against 12 batters faced, earning his second save of the season.
