Columbia, Mo. - Missouri's first wrestling National Champion in the 62-year history of the program and first individual National Champion in any sport since 1999, Ben Askren, was named 2006 Rev Wrestler of the Year as announced today by RevWrestling.com.
Capping off his junior season with a perfect 45-0 record and a National Title at 174-pounds, the Hartland, Wis., native earned seven of the eight first plate votes awarded, with the eighth going to Minnesota heavyweight Kole Conrad. Askren edged out Konrad by five votes (63-58) for the distinction of 2006 Rev Wrestler of the Year.
"Ben Askren put together one of the most dominating single seasons in the history of NCAA wrestling," Rev Wrestling.com senior writer Andrew Hipps said. "He made it look easy while wrestling with a wide-open style that is extremely entertaining to watch."
Setting records for most Missouri pins in a season (25) and in a career (61), as well as owning the longest consecutive win streak in Tiger history (45), Askren was named Outstanding Wrestler of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Tournament last Saturday at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City.
The RevWrestler of the Year award is given to the nation's top collegiate wrestler across all divisions of wrestling as voted on by the writers and executives of RevWrestling.com.
Fans interested in seeing Askren will have an opportunity today as the grappler heads to Cost Cutters for his first haircut since opening his successful campaign.
