Brimmage led Mizzou with 14 blocks last week.
Nov. 1, 2010
COLUMBIA, Mo. - After earning a pair of sweeps last week, the Mizzou volleyball team saw two of its members earn Big 12 weekly honors as Brittney Brimmage (East St. Louis, Ill.) was named Big 12 Player of the Week and Caitlyn Vann (Muncie, Ind.) was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday (Nov. 1). In all, the Tigers - winners of four of their last five matches - have claimed eight Big 12 weekly awards this season, the most by any team in the league.
The award for Brimmage is the first of her career while Vann earns Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors for the sixth time in her career and third time in 2010. Brimmage was the standout for the Tiger offense last week as she led Mizzou with 27.5 total points in a pair of sweeps. She posted 20 kills on .441 hitting with 14 total blocks on the week. She began her week by tallying 10 kills on .467 hitting with seven total blocks (one solo, six assists) while helping the Tigers sweep rival Kansas. She also set a career-best with four digs in the match.
Brimmage then came back and posted 10 kills on .421 hitting with seven blocks against Kansas State, all of which were match highs for the Tigers. For the week, Brimmage averaged 3.33 kills per set, 2.33 blocks per set and 4.58 points per set while hitting .441. She moved into fifth place in the Big 12 in hitting (.331) and ninth in blocks per set (1.09) during Big 12 play.
As impressive as Brimmage was, Vann may have had the most eye-catching stat line in the nation last week as she averaged 8.33 digs per set in a pair of Tiger wins. She pulled in 50 digs on the week in just six sets and took over the league lead in digs per set (5.28) during Big 12 play. She pulled in 26 digs in just three sets against Kansas and then came back with 24 in the sweep of Kansas State. Those are the two best three-set marks by any player in the Big 12 this season.
Vann was a key reason why the Tigers were able to limit their opponents to just .093 hitting on the week, the best for the Tigers in back-to-back matches this season. Vann and the Tigers also limited K-State to just .056 hitting on Saturday, the best opponent hitting percentage by the Tigers in 2010. She helped the Tigers corral 20.83 digs per set last week, their best over any two-match stretch this season.
Over her last six matches, Vann has eclipsed the 20-dig mark in five of those and has pulled in more than 30 once. She is averaging a league-best 6.36 digs per set in that span and has averaged 23.33 digs per match. The only match in which she did not reach 20 digs was at No. 3 Nebraska.
Vann, Brimmage and the rest of the Tigers will return to action on Wednesday as they head to Boulder, Colo., for a showdown with the Buffaloes. The match will air live on Fox Sports Rocky Mountain and Mizzou All-Access will also be courtside with the call as well. For all the latest on Mizzou volleyball, stay tuned to MUTigers.com.
