COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Junior Paola Ampudia (Cali, Colombia) of the Mizzou volleyball team was honored with her second-straight Big 12 Rookie of the Week honor as announced by the Big 12 Conference office on Monday (Sept. 21). Ampudia becomes the first Tiger in program history to earn back-to-back Big 12 weekly laurels as she claimed the award last week as well. During the Tigers' matches against Kansas and Oklahoma last week, Ampudia totaled 23 kills, 12 digs, four total blocks and accounted for 25.5 total points to guide the Tigers to a 1-1 record for the week.
"Paola has progressed so much over the last several weeks and it has really started to show in her performance on the court," head coach Wayne Kreklow said. "For her to take home the award in back-to-back weeks just goes to show the level that she has been playing at. There is still a lot of room for improvement for her, but these honors really show all of the potential that she has."
Ampudia has been one of the Tigers' top performers over the last six matches as she has posted 57 kills, 25 digs and 14 total blocks. After setting personal-bests in nearly every statistical category at the Michigan/Pepsi Challenge two weeks ago, Ampudia had one of her best matches of the season against Kansas last Wednesday. She set personal-best marks in kills (15), attacks (37) and digs (nine), just missing her first career double-double. Ampudia set career-bests in blocks (four) and hitting percentage (.500) the week before at Michigan. Ampudia currently ranks 10th in the Big 12 with 2.88 kills per set in league play.
With her performance last week, Ampudia now ranks fourth on the team with 87 kills and is fifth in blocks with 19 total.
Ampudia and the Tigers will return to action this Wednesday (Sept. 23) as they welcome in-state foe UMKC to the Hearnes Center. That match is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. For all the latest on Mizzou volleyball, stay tuned to www.MUTigers.com.
