COLUMBIA, Mo. - Tiger freshman Molly Kreklow (Delano, Minn.) continues to add to her national-level experience as the she was one of 21 athletes in the nation selected to the USA Volleyball Junior National Training Team after participating in the team tryouts back in February and April. The players will take part in the final round of tryouts which will be held this weekend (May 20-23) at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. At the conclusion of the second tryout camp, the top 12 players will be selected to compete at the 2010 NORCECA Women’s Junior (U-20) Continental Championship, set for July 4-12 at Tijuana, Mexico.
“Getting invited to the USA Junior National Team tryouts is a great honor for Molly and speaks to the caliber of players that we have in our program here at Mizzou,” Tiger head coach Wayne Kreklow said. “There is no question that Molly is one of the top setters in the nation in her age group and I think she has an excellent chance of making the squad. The competition is certainly tough, but Molly has been in these situations before and is a great competitor – she’s going to do great. Molly had a great spring with us and it’s exciting to think that as good as she is right now, she is going to get so much better in the months and years to come.”
Of the 21 players selected to the team, Kreklow is one of five setters that will challenge for a spot among the top 12. She is also the only athlete selected that has enrolled in college classes early as each of the reaming 20 athletes did not enroll until the fall semester or still have high school eligibility remaining. With the early enrollment, Kreklow was able to train with the Tigers all semester during the spring training period, which pitted the Tigers against some of the top collegiate competition in the country. Kreklow played as the Tigers’ primary setter during that time.
“I am very excited to get out there and compete,” Kreklow said. “There are going to be four other setters and I have been competing with one of them since I was on the youth national team. As for three other setters, I don’t know about most of them because they are a year younger. I am the only one there who has college experience so far, so that should make for a very interesting weekend.”
Kreklow also brings with her an established USA Volleyball résumé as she was a member of the 2008 U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team that won gold at the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Championship. She is also a seasoned high-level participant and boasts plenty of experience on the national scene at the AAU level. Also, Kreklow advanced through the first round of tryouts back in February, giving her a familiarity with the USA Volleyball coaching staff and facility.
“After going out in February, I know the coach pretty well and he seems like a good coach,” Kreklow added. “Heading back, I am a little more confident since I will be one of the older ones there. And being there back in February, I now know what to expect more as far as training and the whole process. I am really excited to get out there and play.”
The second round of tryouts will begin this weekend (May 20-23) in Colorado Springs, Colo. The top 12 will be announced immediately following the tryouts this weekend, most likely on Sunday (May 23). If the decision is not made then, it will likely be made the following Monday (May 24). For all the latest on Mizzou volleyball, stay tuned to MUTigers.com.
