With the New Year kicking off to a wonderful start, we have begun our first spring workouts of 2014. "Rise and Grind" has become the motto for this year as we kicked off this spring semester with an early morning 6a.m. workout. It was an early morning start but we all came ready to work and train for the upcoming season. We had an incredible season last year, something for the books, so as a unit we hold ourselves to higher standards and know that this offseason will be a time for us to improve both, collectively and individually.

Yesterday was our first day with strength coach, Coach Mack, and we all came with a positive attitude ready to make gains in strength and agility. Yesterday's workouts consisted of a combination of upper body strength training. We began with bench press as we powered through our first day back in the arms department. We did a combination of arm circuits attacking different muscles. Let's just say we came away from that workout sore. Our first time back on that morning grind and Coach Mack was prepared to work us hard! Mission accomplished Coach Mack.

We had our first individual training in the afternoon with the coaches that focus on technique work by position. The first half hour of the individual practice was designated for defensive specialists and our setter (foxy Loxley!), while the second hour was spent with the hitters. As a defensive specialist our practice consisted of some simple ball control drills to get back into the swing of things and focus on our touch. The last half of our practice we worked on speed and agility drills that have been instruments for judging volleyball player's quickness for USA National Tryouts. One drill in particular is called the eye test, which consists of a timed sprint from sideline to sideline which requires both discipline and technique. Coach Kreklow emphasized the need to practice this test religiously in order to become proficient at it. Overall, the first day of workouts were a success and will continue to be for the remainder of the offseason. Onto an open gym practice today, and one of my favorite offseason rehab workouts, hot yoga.
