Lisa Henning had another solid match in the loss.
Oct. 28, 2012
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Mizzou volleyball team fell at Arkansas, 3-0 (23-25, 13-25, 15-25), marking the first time since 2011 that the Tigers have lost back-to-back matches as the Tigers had won eight straight following a loss. The loss drops the Tigers to 15-8 overall and 7-6 in the SEC. Mizzou was once again led by All-American Lisa Henning (Blue Springs, Mo.), who tallied 13 kills on .250 hitting.
The Tigers did not get much offense from anyone but Henning as the next-best Tiger was freshman Regan Peltier (Nixa, Mo.), who posted five kills. Classmate Lydia Ely (St. Louis, Mo.) had four kills as did sophomore Whitney Little (Keller, Texas), but of those three hitters (Peltier, Ely, Little) only Ely hit better than .200 as she tallied her four kills on just five swings. Henning just missed a double-double with nine digs to go along with her 13 kills. Her nine digs tied for the team-lead in the match with libero Sarah Meister (San Diego, Calif.).
Both teams opened on fire offensively in the first set, trading points in the early stages of the frame. The score wound up tied at 10 apiece and both teams combined to commit just one attack error in that span. Things stayed close until Arkansas built a 16-14 lead, forcing a Wayne Kreklow timeout. Little came up with a kill on a good rally following the timeout, but Arkansas took advantage of some Mizzou miscues and ran off five of the next six points to open a 21-16 lead, forcing Kreklow's second timeout of the set.
Arkansas took a 22-16 lead after the timeout, but a 4-0 run kept the Tigers in the set, forcing an Arkansas timeout. The teams traded side outs until Arkansas took a 24-21 lead after a kill from Amanda Anderson. But Mizzou fended off two set points and got a swing from Henning to try and tie the set following an Arkansas timeout, but it was dug in the back row and transitioned to a kill from Jasmine Norton and Arkansas escaped the first set, 25-23.
Mizzou actually out-hit Arkansas, .379-.355 in the first set but had three fewer kills and no answer for Norton, who had eight kills on 12 errorless attacks. Neither team played much defense in the back row in the first as the two teams combined for just 22 digs. Henning led Mizzou with six kills on 12 errorless attacks.
After keeping the frame close in the first, it was all Arkansas in the second set. The Hogs opened up a 15-5 lead in the set and Mizzou was not able to recover as it fell, 25-13, trailing 2-0 heading into intermission. After hitting .379 in the first, Mizzou was limited to just .179 hitting in the second while Arkansas had its way, hitting .593 with 16 kills.
Errors plagued the Tigers in the early stages of the first set, particularly in serve receive as the Hogs opened up an 8-3 lead before a kill from Ely ended a long Arkansas run. Henning tallied kill to pull as close at 8-5, but Arkansas ran off the next three points in the match and it wound up running away with the set, 25-15.
Mizzou will be back in action next Friday (Nov. 2) as it hosts South Carolina on the Mizzou Sports Network at the Hearnes Center at 6:30 p.m. For all the latest on Mizzou volleyball, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on twitter @MU_Volleyball.
