Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri Volleyball team improved to 6-0 on the season on Friday with a pair of three set win over Morgan State University, 15-2 , 15-1, 15-1 and Texas Christian University, 15-8, 15-1, 15-10. The wins came during the first day of the Lathrop & Gage Tiger Invitational The 6-0 start is the best start by a Tiger team since 1983 when that team opened the season with a 6-0 record.
Speaking of records, senior Heather Gerber claimed the MU all-time assist title today with her 35 assist performance against Morgan State and now has 3,875 assists for her career after registering 34 assists tonight against TCU. The former record of 3,812 assists was formally held by Cindy Atterberry who graduated in 1993.
In the first match of the day for MU, the Tigers were led by junior Kristen Johnson, who registered 12 kills and a .632 hitting percentage in the match. Johnson led a balanced Tiger attack and the Tigers were able to get 13 players into the match. Junior Naaron Branson had her best outing on the year with a nine-kill, six-dig performance.
The Tigers then took on a scrappy TCU team in front of 512 Tiger faithful and were able to pick up a win in three sets. MU took the first two sets, but then fell behind in the third set, 4-1 but fought back to pick up 15-10 win in the set. Sophomore Lisa Morris led the team tying a career high with 16 kills and while also picking 11 digs. Kristen Johnson had another good game with 14 kills on 23 attacks while sophomore Christi Meyer landed 10 kills. The Tiger continued to put up solid hitting percentage numbers logging an impressive.412 for the match.
The win moves the Tigers to 6-0 on the year with Big 12 play set to kick off next week. They will take on Arkansas State University at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and Marquette University on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. in the Hearnes Center.
