Women's Tennis Signs Three for '07-'08

Nov. 21, 2006

Columbia, Mo. - Mizzou Women's Tennis Coach Blake Starkey announced three four-star players have signed letters-of-intent to join the Tigers in 2007-2008. Adding quality depth to next year's Tiger squad will be Mallory Weber, Maureen Modesto and Kaitlyn Ritchie.

"We said a while back we'd be recruiting with more focus domestically and specifically within the Midwest," said Coach Starkey. "This class is a great first step and we're very excited about these three. We looked at kids who clearly wanted to be at the University of Missouri and also took into account our academic strengths such as our journalism program. This is a very solid and athletic class that will represent Mizzou well. I wish they were here already and have no doubt our fans will enjoy watching them play."

Mallory Weber (Belleville, Illinois) is one of the top players in Illinois, as well as one of the top-ranked players in the Missouri Valley Section. She is ranked #69 by tennisrecruiting.net. An excellent athlete, Weber played competitive basketball and tennis all throughout high school. Mallory has not selected her major yet.

Kaitlyn Ritchie (Bartlesville, Oklahoma) gives the Tigers a second solid player directly out of the Missouri Valley Section. Ritchie is the top player coming out of Oklahoma this year and comes from a strong tennis family. Her brother, J.P. plays for the Iowa Hawkeyes, and her father, Pat, played for Tulsa and is one of the top tennis instructors in Oklahoma. Katelyn represented the Missouri Valley Section on the Fed Cup team this summer and is ranked #145 by tennisrecruiting.net. She has not selected her major yet.

Maureen Modesto comes to the Tigers from Highland, Indiana. Formerly ranked #1 in the Western Section, Maureen is one of the top players coming out of Indiana. She took second in state as a freshman, second as sophomore, and her team took second her junior year with her playing #1 her entire career. Maureen has won 14 USTA sportsmanship awards and holds an Indiana record for playing the most matches (181) in one calendar year during her junior year. She is ranked #95 by tennisrecruiting.net. She intends to study journalism.
