Sophomore Jamie Mera won her opening match against Tulsa's Jie Zeng 0-6, 6-1, 6-1. She then fell to tenth-seeded Emily Carbone of Arkansas in the round of 32, 6-0, 6-1. "Everyone who advances to this tournament is a good tennis player. There are no bad losses here, just good wins," said Starkey. In pairs play, senior Sofia Ayala and junior Kaitlyn Ritchie earned a spot in the round of 64 by defeating Wichita State's Delia Damaschin and Florentina Hanisch, 8-6. The duo then advanced to the round of 32 with a win over Saint Louis University's Hailee Elmore and Casey Miller, 8-3. "This is the first time these girls are playing together. They have some comparable styles so we're just going to see what we can do," said Starkey.
The singles finalists and doubles champions from each regional earn berths into the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by Yale University in New Haven, Conn. Nov. 5-8. |
