Tigers Prepare for Second Annual Ace For A Cure Tournament
Sept. 30, 2009
Columbia, MO - After a solid opening weekend at the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas, the Mizzou Women's tennis team will spend the week preparing for their first home tournament of the fall. Mizzou's second annual "Ace for a Cure" tennis tournament will be held Friday, Oct. 2, through Sunday Oct. 4, at the Green Tennis Center. "This tournament has a special meaning to our girls. We really enjoyed it last year and have been looking forward to making this year even better," said head coach Blake Starkey. Joining the Tigers this weekend will be University of Louisville, Drake University, and Texas Tech University. The visiting schools will provide stiff competition for the Tigers as well as an early look at conference play. "They're all great teams. We've been working really hard, and I look forward to seeing how we match up," said Starkey. All participants in the tournament will receive free housing with Columbia families for the weekend. "We've been very fortunate that our tennis community stays in constant support of us, and will welcome these girls into their homes. It's much nicer than a regular hotel," Starkey said. On Saturday, participants and fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness. There will be a donation box at the front desk of the Green Tennis Center all weekend for those interested. Also, pink "Ace for a Cure" tournament t-shirts will be on sale for $10, with the proceeds benefiting cancer research. After play on Saturday, all participants will attend a luncheon with a guest speaker to discuss breast cancer awareness and early detection. Play will begin daily at 10:00 a.m. with a round of doubles followed by two rounds of singles. All matches are scheduled to be played outdoors, weather permitting.
