COLUMBIA, Mo. - With the summer reaching its end and student-athletes returning to Columbia in a little over a month, Mizzou Athletics will catch up with members of the Mizzou tennis program and see how their personal summer has gone.

In the third edition of the Mizzou tennis "Summer Update", we sat down with sophomore Beatriz Machado Santos. After spending her freshman year at Texas Tech University, Santos is set to begin her Tigers career this upcoming 2014-15 season.

In her first tennis collegiate campaign, Santos enjoyed an impressive year with the Red Raiders in Lubbock, Texas after going 10-6 in doubles play and 16-5 in singles competition. The Lisbon, Portugal native particularly shined in Big 12 play after recording a 7-2 mark in doubles competition against conference foes. Alongside partner Lynn Kiro, Santos went undefeated in Big 12 matches and won the Big 12 No. 3 doubles title.

After a standout campaign in the Big 12, Santos will now be joining Mizzou and her teammates inside the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Using the valuable experience she gained in 2013-14 at Texas Tech, Santos is ready for the top-flight competition inside the SEC.

"Even though the Big 12 is a very competitive league, the SEC is definitely the best conference for women's tennis right now," said Santos. "Every team in the SEC is great and coming into a conference match you know you'll have a tough opponent every time. I felt like in the Big 12 not all the teams were at the same skill level, and that just doesn't happen in the SEC. I'm looking forward to the challenge of playing in a great conference like the SEC!"

While the sophomore complied an impressive overall resume during her first year in collegiate tennis, it was her play during doubles competition that stood out the most. In the upcoming fall and spring seasons for Mizzou tennis, both Santos' coaches and teammates will look upon her to step up during doubles play.

"I really enjoy playing doubles and last year I was fortunate enough to play with my roommate and great friend which made everything so much easier," proclaimed Santos. "I know Sasha (Schmid) and Jason (Potthoff) like to play really aggressive doubles so I'm excited to be able to contribute to that style of playing. Doubles has become really important in college tennis and usually the team that brings more energy right from the start has a good chance of winning. I know that we'll be focusing a lot in bringing great energy to the court."

Similar to all of the current members of the Mizzou Tigers roster, Santos is eager to return to Columbia, Mo. in a couple weeks and begin preparation for the upcoming 2014 fall season. For a newcomer and transfer like herself, the excitement of beginning a new chapter of her personal and athletics career is clearly at hand.

"I'm looking forward to get to work with great coaches like Sasha and Jason and also to be a part of a great school like the University of Missouri," said Santos. "We've been very active on our team blog so I feel like I'm starting to know all my teammates better, but I can't wait until we're finally all together in Columbia!"
