COLUMBIA, Mo. - University of Missouri Head Tennis Coach Sasha Schmid announced today addition of transfer Cierra Gaytan-Leach (Corona, del Mar, Calif.) to the 2012-13 roster. Gaytan-Leach, an incoming junior, competed at Texas the past two seasons and is eligible to play for the Tigers immediately.
"I am thrilled to announce the addition of Cierra Gaytan-Leach to the Missouri tennis team," Schmid said. "As a coaching staff we have the utmost respect for her, having competed against her last year, her game and her passion is perfectly suiting for college tennis. She had two great seasons at Texas, where she helped get them in to the top 10 in the nation and into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. She is coming to Missouri because she wants to make an impact on a team that is looking to break through to the next level. We truly believe that she will be a leader for Mizzou as we enter the SEC."
Gaytan-Leach comes to Mizzou after two impressive seasons at Texas. In her two year career as a Longhorn, she compiled an overall singles record of 66-34, including a 43-19 mark in dual matches.
This past season playing at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles, Gaytan-Leach went 27-14, with a 7-2 mark in Big 12 Conference matches. She was named the 2012 Big 12 Champion at No. 4 singles for posting the best season record at the spot and earned Big 12 Player of the Week on April 16. In doubles action, Gaytan-Leach went 22-13 overall at both No. 1 and No. 2.
In the 2012 postseason, Gaytan-Leach was especially impressive as she clinched Texas' last three victories, which included the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals and in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
In 2011 as a freshman, went 12-6 in singles action, including 9-3 in dual matches, in addition to a 21-10 record in doubles play.
