COLUMBIA, Mo. - University of Missouri Head Tennis Coach Sasha Schmid announced on Tuesday the addition of transfer Beatriz Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal) to the Mizzou tennis program. Machado Santos, who competed at Texas Tech during the 2013-14 season, will join the Tigers in August and be available to play for the Tigers in the fall.
"We are looking forward to Bea joining our team this fall," Schmid said. "Bea is excited to compete in the competitive SEC and help our team make progress in every way. Her addition to our squad continues to add important depth to our tennis team. Bea will contribute to our team with both singles and doubles points for the Tigers and is an experienced tennis player with a valuable year of college tennis under her belt."
As a freshman for the Red Raiders in 2013-14, Machado Santos went 10-6 in doubles and 16-5 in singles competition. She ended the fall season on a four match winning streak and won the turquoise singles title at the Lobo Fall Invitational. In the spring, she won four of five matches to start the dual season, including wins against conference opponents from Oklahoma, Kansas and Kansas State.
In doubles, Machado Santos went 10-3 in dual action, with a 7-2 mark in Big 12 Conference play. She and Lynn Kiro, paired in late march, went undefeated in Big 12 matches to win the conference's No. 3 doubles title. Altogether, they went 9-1 to end the season, including an 8-4 win over Ole Miss' Julia Jones and Zalina Khairudinova in the NCAA Tournament.
Before arriving in the United States to compete in at the collegiate level, Machado Santos was the reigning Portuguese Under-18 national singles champion for the U18 national team. She represented Portugal at the U18 European Individual Championships and the U18 European Team Championships last summer.
Machado Santos twice advanced through the qualifying rounds to make the main draw at the ITF Pro Circuit $10,000 event in Coimbra, Portugal. She also earned three WTA Pro Circuit points with main draw wins at the ITF $10,000 in Cantanhede, Portugal, in June 2012 and the ITF $10,000 in Espinho, Portugal, in September 2011. Additionally, she made the qualifying at the WTA Estoril in 2010 and was the youngest player awarded a wildcard at the event.
In doubles, Machado Santos won national doubles titles in U12, U14 and U16 competitions and was a 2012 doubles regional champion.
