TULSA, Okla. - The Mizzou tennis team advanced one singles player and two doubles teams to the Round of 16 during the second day of action at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championship in Tulsa, Okla. on Friday.
Freshman Madison Rhyner opened Mizzou action on Thursday in the first round of the main qualifying draw, where she suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Oklahoma's Whitney Wofford.
Main draw doubles first round action kicked off Friday play, where the team of senior Maria Christensen and sophomore Alex Clark suffered an 8-6 loss to Arizona State's Janie Nowland and Iona Teu. The teams of junior Cierra Gaytan-Leach and sophomore Elisha Gabb and junior Rachel Stuhlmann and freshman Madison Rhyner each received byes in the first round and pulled out wins in second round action. Gaytan-Leach and Gabb earned an 8-3 win over Minnesota's Natallia Pintusava and Paula Otero, while Stuhlmann and Rhyner defeated Minnesota's Aria Lambert and Jessika Mozia.
Gaytan-Leach and Gabb face Oklahoma State's C. C. Sardinia and Meghan Blevins in the third round on Saturday, while Stuhlmann and Rhyner advanced to play Tulsa's Sam Vickers and Isaura Enrique.
In singles action, Clark, Gabb and Gaytan-Leach all recorded first round victories. Clark ousted Iowa State's Ksenia Pronina, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, Gabb defeated Mia Lancaster of Oklahoma, 7-6 (1), 6-7 (3), 6-4, and Gaytan-Leach beat Wichita State's Carla Venticinque, 7-5, 6-0. Also in the first round, Christensen fell to Nebraska's Patricia Veresova, 6-2, 6-2, and Rachel Stuhlmann lost to Stefanie Weinstein of Nebraska, 6-7 (7), 6-0, 6-1.
Gaytan-Leach advanced to the Round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Tulsa's Carol Benito in the main draw second round. Clark and Gabb both fell in the round, with Kansas State's Petra Niedermayerova defeating Clark, 6-0, 6-0, and Gabb falling to Oklahoma State's Meghan Blevins, 6-2, 6-4.
Gaytan-Leach will face Oklahoma's Whitney Ritchie on Saturday in singles action.
Three Tigers also played singles matches in the first round of the consolation bracket on Friday. Christensen and Rhyner emerged victorious during the round, with Christensen a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Maddie Johnson and Rhyner a 6-3, 6-2 winner of Pauline Gilbert of Minnesota.
Mizzou continues play at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championship on Saturday morning.
