Tigers Finish Strong At New Mexico Invite

Oct. 19, 2008

Albuquerque, N.M. – The final day of competition began Sunday (Oct. 19) morning at 9 a.m. in Albuquerque, N.M. The New Mexico Invitational featured seven teams from around the nation. Competing teams were hosting-school the University of New Mexico, Kansas St., Iowa St., Air Force, Western New Mexico, UTEP and Missouri. Play began Thursday (Oct. 16) morning and completed Sunday afternoon. Mizzou won each of it’s doubles matches on Sunday and three of five singles matches.

Sunday began with the final round of doubles competition. Each of the Tiger duos won their respective match. Missouri’s senior Jessica Giuggioli paired up with sophomore Kaitlyn Ritchie this fall season to win several matches. The final day of play in N.M. would be no different as the duo defeated Edit Suhajda and Orsi Golovics of Northern Arizona, 8-4. Jamie Mera and Mallory Weber have also teamed up through the fall season with much success. Today was no exception as the team took down Natasha Vieira and Petra Chuda of Kansas State, 8-4. Sofia Ayala and Maureen Modesto would wrap up flawless Tiger doubles play with a win over a pair from the host-school. New Mexico’s Sandra Walker and Eliane Bourdages fell to Missouri’s duo, 8-2.

In Singles Flight A Mera faced Golovics of Northern Arizona and took the match easily with a 6-1, 6-1, victory.

The championship match of Singles Flight B was to be played between Weber and Ayala. Deciding not to pair the two Tigers up each player battled an opponent from an opposing school and came out on top. Weber defeated Anya Villanueva-Forte, who many Tigers have seen this weekend, in three sets. After taking the first set 6-3, Weber kept the second one close but took the set-loss, 5-7. Weber went on to win the tie-breaking set, 10-6, and the match. Ayala faced Liza Wischer from Iowa State. Ayala took the match in two sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Kaitlyn Ritchie also made it into the finals match of Single Flight C. Ritchie fell to Chuda of Kansas State, 6-1, 6-3.

The tournament marks the end of Missouri’s fall campaign. The Tigers will pick up play again in January as they begin their spring season on the 17th at the Florida Coast Invite in Fort Myers, Fla.
