No. 56 Mizzou Falls to No. 8 Texas, 5-2

COLUMBIA, Mo. -The No. 56 University of Missouri tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss at the hands of No. 8 Texas Sunday afternoon at the Green Tennis Center. The Tigers fell to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 Conference action, while the Longhorns improved to 9-4 and 2-0.

Texas nabbed the doubles point as it won all three matches. team of Nina Pantic and Jamie Mera battled hard but ultimately fell to Lina Padegimaite and Noel Scott, ranked 23rd nationally, 8-7, at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2, Texas' Cierra Gaytan-Leach and Krista Damico defeated Rachel Stuhlmann and Annemijn Koenen, 8-1, and Elizabeth Begley and Juliana Gajic earned an 8-3 win over Mizzou's Alex Clark and Ashleigh Chiaf, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.

In singles action, Stuhlmann claimed a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9) win over Scott at No. 2. Stuhlmann trailed in the second set but can back to send the match to a third set tiebreak. She then scored the last five points of the tiebreak to earn the victory. Koenen also earned a comeback win at No. 6 singles over Gajic, 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (12-10). Gajic led 4-2 in the second set before Koenen stormed back to send the match to a tiebreak, which she won in dramatic fashion.

Texas earned singles victories at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 to clinch the victory. At No. 1, Damico, ranked 75th nationally, prevailed over Pantic, 7-6, 6-2. Gaytan-Leach earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Maria Christensen at No. 3 singles, Padegimaite defeated Mera 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 4 and Elizabeth Begley claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win over Clark at No. 5.

The Tigers hit the road for a six match road trip next weekend. The squad opens play on Friday, March 23 at Oklahoma State and Sunday, March 25 at Oklahoma.
