Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri women's tennis team (9-6/1-2 Big 12) defeated the 55th-ranked Kansas Jayhawks (5-6/1-2 Big 12), 4-3, Sunday afternoon on the Green Tennis Center's indoor courts. With the win, the Tigers earn three points in the Border Showdown Series, take their first Big 12 win of the young conference season and win their first match against a ranked team in 2008.
"The win was not just against KU. They are ranked 55th. We finally got that big W, and it's good for our girls," Tiger Head Coach Blake Starkey said. "But I have nothing but respect for KU, they're a good team and a good group of girls."
The Tigers took the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches to take an early, 1-0, lead against the Jayhawks.
At No. 1, Mizzou's top duo of Chrissy Svetlic and Mallory Weber took an 8-6 win over Kansas' Elizaveta Avdeeva and Edina Horvath. The Mizzou duo won its fifth dual match win of the season by serving strong and playing well at the net. Weber showed both skills in the final game, as she served two aces and slammed a floating ball back to Kansas' court to help Mizzou win the doubles point.
Mizzou's other doubles victory came on court No. 3, as Jessica Giuggioli and Kaitlyn Ritchie took care of KU's Yuliana Svistun and Magdalena Tokarczyk, 8-5. This was Ritchie's 20th doubles victory, dating back to the fall. She is an impressive 20-5 during her freshman season. The duo is 7-2 at No. 3 doubles on the spring.
The Tigers, already up in the match, 1-0, needed three more singles victories to seal the victory. They got just that, with victories at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6, to beat the Jayhawks for the second straight time.
At No. 2, Giuggioli earned her second victory of the weekend, and her 10th singles victory this spring by defeating Avdeeva in an epic three-set match. The two competitors battled each other from the baseline for nearly two and a half hours (2:21), exchanging powerful forehands and backhands, mixed in with an occasional drop shot. Giuggioli won the first and third sets, to take the match, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Although Mizzou freshman Maureen Modesto's No. 5 singles match did not get underway until the No. 1 match was over, she actually finished her match before Giuggioli's, marking Mizzou's first singles win of the day. Modesto defeated Hommell, 6-4, 6-3, to earn her 20th singles victory of the season, and eighth of the dual match season.
Giuggioli's win at No. 2 tied the match at 3-3, putting all the attention on the No. 6 singles match between Ritchie and KU's Stephanie Smith. Ritchie used the supportive home crowd to her advantage and won the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to clinch Mizzou's first Big 12 victory of the season.
"It was the most fueled match of the year," Ritchie said. "There were a ton of people here, the energy was different. I was nervous (about my match), because I knew it was going to come down to my match, but it feels good to win."
In other action, KU's top player, Tokarczyk, defeated Weber, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 singles. Horvath also won in straight sets, taking the No. 3 singles match from Svetlic, 6-4, 6-3. At No. 4, Dorn defeated Dunham, 7-5, 6-4.
The Tigers will take a week off before traveling to Texas to play Texas Tech (March 28) and Baylor (March 30). The Bears are currently ranked No. 5 in the ITA rankings. After that road trip, Texas A&M and Texas come to Columbia, April 4th and 5th, respectively, to close out the home schedule.
