COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou tennis team dropped a 6-1 match to the LSU Tigers at the Mizzou Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon. Missouri fell to 5-11 overall and 0-5 in Southeastern Conference action, while LSU improved to 7-7 and 1-4.
Senior Cierra Gaytan-Leach was a bright spot for the Tigers, she notched a big victory over the No. 69 player in the nation.
The visitors recorded wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take a 1-0 advantage into singles. LSU's Joana Vale Costa and Skylar Holloway posted an 8-6 win over sophomore Madison Rhyner and freshman Cassidy Spearman at No. 2, while visiting Tigers Abby Owens and Gabrielle Otero defeated sophomore Kelli Hine and freshman Tracy Dong, 8-3, at No. 3 action. For the third straight SEC contest, seniors Gaytan-Leach and Rachel Stuhlmann lead their No. 1 doubles match but the point was clinched before the pair could record victories.
In singles, LSU took a 2-0 lead after Holloway recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win over Dong at No. 6 competition. At No. 5, Mizzou's Spearman suffered a 6-4, 6-2 loss at the hands of Ella Taylor to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage.
After losing her first set 6-0, Rhyner battled back for a second set tiebreak against Owens at No. 4 but ultimately fell, 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) as LSU clinched the team win. Hine won her first set but LSU's Noel Scott responded to take the final two sets and defeat Hine, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Gaytan-Leach and Joana Vale Costa, ranked No. 69 nationally, split the first two sets as well. Gaytan-Leach won set one, 6-3, while Vale Costa was victorious in set two, 7-5. However, Gaytan-Leach took set three, 6-3, to emerge with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles.
At No. 3 singles, Stuhlmann and Otero battled to a third-set tiebreak but the visiting Tiger came out with a 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 1-0 (10-8) win.
The Tigers return to the court on for a double header on Sunday, March 16. Mizzou will host conference foe Arkansas at Noon and Drake at 6 p.m.
