AKRON, Ohio - The No. 52 Mizzou tennis team picked up a 4-3 victory over Akron Friday afternoon in Akron, Ohio. The Tigers improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Zips fell to 1-4.
Akron took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 action to go up 1-0 early. Mizzou's No. 2 team of sophomore Alex Clark and freshman Madison Rhyner earned an 8-2 win over Akron's Angelika Jogasuria and Madison Cohen to start play. However, junior Cierra Gaytan-Leach and sophomore Elisha Gabb fell at No. 1, 9-7, and senior Maria Christensen and junior Rachel Stuhlmann also fell 9-7 at No. 3 doubles.
Christensen got the Tigers rolling in singles action as she recorded an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win over Angelika Jogasuria at No. 4 play. Gaytan-Leach followed that with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Olga Shkundina at No. 1 singles and Stuhlmann prevailed 6-4, 6-4, over Prang Pantsuart at No. 2.
The Zips made the score 3-2 when Ksenia Berestetska defeated Rhyner, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 action. But the Tigers clinched the match when Clark came back to post a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Madison Cohen. A 6-4, 6-4 victory for Akron's Angelina Jogasuria against Elisha Gabb made the final score 4-3 in favor of the Tigers.
Missouri returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 9 a.m. ET (8 a.m. CT) against Princeton in Akron, Ohio.
