SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Mizzou swimming and diving teams swept in-state foe Missouri State Friday evening at the Hammons Student Center Pool in Springfield, Mo. The men posted a 155-88 victory to improve to 4-1 overall, while the women won 139-97 to go to 2-3.
The Tigers won a combined 16 events during the meet, eight by the women and eight by the men. On the men's side, senior David Bonuchi and junior Eegan Groome led the way with as both nabbed a pair of wins against the Bears.
Bonuchi swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events during the meet. The senior notched a score of 402.67 on the 1-meter and 390.97 on the 3-meter to finish ahead of sophomore Clark Thomas, who took second on both boards with scores of 349.95 and 369.52, respectively. Both of Bonuchi's scores marked season highs, while Thomas posted a season high on the 3-meter.
Missouri also swept the women's diving events, with redshirt junior Loren Figueroa and junior Lauren Callin splitting the boards. In her first competition of the year, Figueroa won the 1-meter with a score of 310.27, while Callin took the 3-meter with 288.07 points.
Groome led a one-two-three Tiger finish in the 500 free with a first-place swim of 4:32.49. Redshirt sophomore Nick Davis took second in 4:33.74, followed by freshman Martin Wallace in third in 4:34.90. Groome also finished first in the 200 free with a season best time of 1:39.15, just ahead of freshman Michael Chadwick's 1:39.94, which was good for second.
In the first event of the day, the Mizzou women's A team of junior Emily Doucette, freshman Katharine Ross, senior Lexi Spivak and junior Kellie Barbiea won the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:47.17. The Tigers' B squad of sophomores Madison Bridges, Lauren Stoeckle, Miranda Mercke and freshman Arianna Bernstein took second in 3:50.67.
On the men's side, Missouri State placed first in the 400 medley relay in 3:15.55, ahead of Missouri's second-place A team of senior Logan Mosley and juniors Sam Tierney, Mack Darragh and Alex Glogoza (3:18.03).
Just like the men, the Mizzou women claimed the top two spots in the 200 free. Sophomore Anna Patterson won the women's race in a season best 1:52.18, while Spivak was second in 1:53.42, also a season best.
Missouri's women also notched top finishes in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 back and 200 IM. Junior Danielle Barbiea placed first in the 50 free with a time of 23.56, ahead of freshman Victoria Trost, who was second in 24.28.
Trost posted an event win of her own in the 100 free as she took first with a season best time of 52.63. Spivak was second in 53.62 and Kellie Barbiea was third in 53.93.
The Tigers also had season best times in the 200 back, where Bridges took top honors in 1:59.94 and senior Andrea Marko finished second in 2:03.64.
Mizzou's men also notched first-place finishes in the 100 free, 200 fly and 200 breast events. Sophomore Max Grodecki clocked a time of 44.90 in the 100 free to take top honors, followed closely by Chadwick's 45.96.
In the men's 200 breast, juniors Tierney and Igor Kozlovskij gave the Tigers a one-two finish. Tierney placed first in 1:59.49, while Kozlvovskij was second in 2:03.18.
Junior Andrew Phillips won the 200 fly with a time of 1:50.06. Darragh was close behind to take second with a swim of 1:50.16.
The Mizzou men's team of Grodecki, Mosley, junior Alex Glogoza and Grodecki also claimed first-place in the 400 free relay with a season best time of 3:00.41. Grodecki swam an opening split of 44.81 to post a season high.
Missouri's women's 400 free relay team of Danielle Barbiea, Patterson, Doucette and Trost swam in exhibition but still notched a season best time of 3:28.63.
The Tigers return to the pool for the three-day Mizzou Invite Nov. 21-23 at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
