COLUMBIA, Mo. - Each year at Mizzou, hundreds of student-athletes compete at the highest level for their respective sport. While the majority of people will notice their on-field accomplishments, often the individuals' efforts off the field remain un-publicized.
One of the many groups at Mizzou that is dedicated to assist and honor Mizzou student-athletes is the Total Person Program (TPP). Beginning in September and running through April, the TPP will pick four student-athletes that consistently excelled academically, athletically and in the community.
Last month, the TPP honored the first quartet of Mizzou student-athletes. Senior Max Copeland (Football), senior Jordan Gagliano (Wrestling), senior Mackenzie McGill (Gymnastics), and junior Jill Rushin (Track and Field) made up the September winners.
For the month of October, the TPP have re-named their program to the "Three Stripes Club". The newest members of the prestigious club are Bree Fowler (Women's Basketball), Igor Kozlovskij (Men's Swimming), Mackenzie Sykes (Softball), and Ryan Zech (Men's Golf).
Fowler, a 2013 Winter SEC Academic Honor Roll recipient, is entering her junior year at Mizzou. Last season on the hard court, Fowler in 24 of Missouri's contests which included a season high seven points against Texas A&M. She has translated her success to the local community as well, as she has given time with the Special Olympics, Grand Elementary Read-a-Thon, and the Boys and Girls Club.
A junior on the men's swimming and diving team, Kozlovskij was named the team captain prior to this season. Kozlovskij is a native of Lithuania, and has made an immediate impact here at Mizzou. Accolades with the swimming and diving team have included being named a 3-time Honorable Mention All-American, All-SEC First Team member and a Scholar All-American First Team recipient. He has also starred within the local Columbia area, with volunteer work at the MS150, Tiger Family Fest, Boys and Girls Club, Food Bank, and Soap Box Derby with the Optimus Club.
Sykes enters his senior year in Columbia, and will be completing her sports management major with a business minor. A leader both on the field and in the classroom, Sykes was recognized as a 2013 Spring Academic Honor Roll recipient. She also continues to find time outside of her duties with the softball team to aid others in need. Some of Sykes' community efforts include serving as a member with the SAAC, representing the Mizzou Moves team and volunteering with the Adopt-a-Family program.
Zech, was named on the 2013 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll, as he continues to work towards his middle school math education major at Mizzou. When he's not preparing for his next outing with the men's golf team, Zech spends time at Oakland Middle School and attends Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
