Oct. 11, 2013
Columbia, Mo.Mizzou Softball hosted Jefferson College and Highland Community College on Friday afternoon (Oct.11) to complete its Fall Ball season. Freshman Casey Stangel (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) got the start against Jefferson College while fellow Freshman Tori Finucane (Germantown, M.D.) had the ball to start against Highland Community College. The bats came alive in the first game as the Tigers won 18-0 and finished the day off with a 3-1 victory over Highland C.C.
Stangel turned in another outstanding performance in the first game pitching five shutout innings with five strikeouts while allowing only one hit and walking three. Her performance continued on the offensive end as she gave herself some run support with a team-leading five RBI. Senior Alora Marble (Jefferson City, Mo) came in to pitch the last two innings and finished what Stangel started allowing no hits and striking out three.
Sophomore Sami Fagan (Dunnellon, Fla.) got the offense going early from the leadoff spot going 4-5 with four runs scored and an RBI, her success was contagious as eight of the nine Missouri starters finished with an RBI. The Tigers 18 runs and 20 hits are both team highs for the 2013 Fall Ball season.
In the second game against Highland, Finucane continued the strong pitching for the Tigers striking out eight over five innings while allowing just one run on one hit and three walks. Marble once again pitched the last two innings for the Tigers and once again did not give up a run while allowing two hits and no walks.
In a tight game, sophomore catcher Carlie Rose (Nixa, Mo.) came up big on the defensive end throwing out two base-runners attempting to steal. After not batting in the first game, junior infielder Corrin Genovese (East Amherst, N.Y.) went 1-for-3 with two RBI including a sacrifice fly in the 6th to add a critical insurance run. Sophomore Emily Crane (Troy, Mo.) led the Tigers with three hits.
