COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri softball program has announced the addition of Sami Fagan, who is transferring from the University of Florida after her freshman season. Fagan will sit out 2013 due to Southeastern Conference transfer rules, but will be eligible for the 2014 campaign with three years of eligibility remaining.
“Sami is a great player and we are very excited to have her at Missouri,” Head Coach Ehren Earleywine stated. “After spending time with her in the recruiting process, it is clear to me that not only is she a great player, but a great person as well. I am proud to be her coach through this next chapter of her life and am confident it will be a positive experience for all involved.”
A native of Dunnellon, Fla., Fagan posted the second-best batting average for the Gators and the fifth-best average in the SEC last season, hitting .378 at the plate with seven doubles, five triples and 30 runs batted in. Her five triples ranked 14th in all of Division I softball. She got on base at a .440 clip and stole 20 bases in 24 attempts.
Additionally, Fagan hit .643 while bunting, recording 18 bunt singles last season in 28 attempts. She was selected to the All-SEC Tournament Team and was tied for third overall in the SEC in 2012 with 71 hits.
“I’m so excited to come to Mizzou,” said Fagan. “When I took my visit, I liked everything about it. I felt like I fit in really well there after touring the campus and meeting with the staff and players.”
Fagan was the 2011 Gatorade Florida Player of the Year, making her the fourth Gatorade Player of the Year on the Tiger roster. Senior Nicole Hudson was Missouri’s Gatorade Player of the Year in 2009, while incoming freshman Emily Crane won the award this past season. Sophomore Kelsi Jones won Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Indiana in 2011.
“We are so happy that Sami will be joining us at Mizzou,” said Executive Associate Athletic Director Tim Hickman. “As we do with all transfers, we thoroughly reviewed Sami and feel she will be a great addition to our program. Sami will get the next school year to adjust to our softball program and Mizzou. We look forward to her making our team better during this time as well as when she starts competing for us in the 2014 season. ”
A utility player who primarily played third base in 2012, Fagan was a three-time NFCA High School All-American, picking up First Team honors in both 2009 and 2011. Fagan also earned All-America recognition by ESPN Rise in 2010. During her sophomore and junior seasons, she hit safely in 63 straight games, breaking the Florida state record for longest hitting streak.
As a senior in high school, Fagan hit an astounding .693 with four triples, 51 runs, 17 runs batted in and 28 stolen bases. She finished her high school career with a .629 batting average, 234 runs scored and 141 stolen bases while helping Dunnellon High School to the 2010 Class 4A Florida State Championship title.
“I can't wait to start this next chapter of my life at such a great school. It's going to be an awesome experience,” Fagan exclaimed.
