Freshman Rhea Taylor Earns All-America Honors
May 28, 2008
Columbia, Mo.- Missouri freshman softball player Rhea Taylor (Buford, Ga.) was awarded second team All-America honors as announced today by the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). With the nod, Taylor becomes the 16th Tiger softball player to earn All-America recognition and the first since 2003. In addition, the outfielder is just the second freshman in Missouri softball history to earn All-America honors, the last, Melanie Fischer, was recognized in 2001.
Named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Taylor finished the 2008 campaign with a team-leading .402 average, the best mark in six years of Missouri softball. The nation's leader in stolen bases, Taylor set the new Big 12 and Missouri single season stolen bases mark at 57. Taylor etched her name at the top of four Missouri single season record books including at bats (219), runs scored (64) and hits (88).
Among Taylor's other honors, she was the only freshman named to the All-Big 12 first team. Taylor is one of seven Big 12 softball players to earn a place on one of the three All-America teams. A total of 54 women were divided between the three teams.
Taylor helped the Tigers to a 47-17 record that included the programs' first NCAA Regional Title in 14 years and the first-ever NCAA Super Regional appearance.
