COLUMBIA, Mo. – Three members of the Missouri softball team were named 2012 Capital One Academic All-Americans, as announced by the College Sport Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday morning.
This marks the first time since 2009 (Lindsey Ubrun) that Missouri has had a member of the squad named an Academic All-American, and the three selections ties the program record that was set in 1991. Junior Jenna Marston was selected to the First Team, the first time the Tigers have had a First Team selection since Karen Snelgrove was recognized in 1991. Senior Ashley Fleming and redshirt junior Chelsea Thomas were named to the Second Team.
Marston is an industrial engineering major with a 3.98 grade point average. A native of St. Louis, Mo., Marston has led the ninth-seeded Tigers to a 46-12 record and their fifth straight NCAA Regional title. A three-time All-Big 12 Conference selection, she is hitting .301 with six doubles, two triples and 15 RBI’s. She has walked 45 times, setting a single-season record at Missouri. In her first season as a catcher, she has a .992 fielding percentage.
The second two-time Big 12 Pitcher of the Year in conference history, Thomas is sporting a 3.48 GPA and is majoring in biology. This season, she’s posted a 26-7 record and has a 1.00 earned run average, the third-lowest in the country. In 211.0 innings pitched, Thomas has struck out 290 batters – the second most in a single-season at Mizzou – while limiting opponents to a .159 batting average.
One of two Tiger seniors on the squad, Fleming has emerged as one of the top power hitters in the country this season and is leading the team in every major offensive category. Majoring in journalism with a 3.78 GPA, Fleming is hitting .377 on the season with 12 doubles, 16 home runs and 51 runs batted in. She has climbed in to a tie for second all-time at Mizzou in career home runs with 43, and has the third-most homers in a single season at Missouri.
