Freshman P Tori Finucane
May 8, 2014
COLUMBIA, Mo.– Freshman pitcher Tori Finucane (Germantown, Md.) has been named a Top 10 Finalist for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s inaugural Division I National Freshman of the Year trophy, announced Thursday, May 8, by the organization. The award will be presented prior to the start of the 2014 NCAA Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Recently named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year, Finucane finished her first regular season in the circle ranking second in the league in both overall ERA (1.70) and conference games-only ERA (2.03). She won 11 SEC games, a mark that ranked fourth in the conference. Finucane earned First Team All-SEC recognition, as well as a spot on the Freshman All-SEC Team, to round out her league honors.
Finucane became the second player in Mizzou Softball history to sweep both major national player of the week awards on April 29, when she was selected as both the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week and the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week. The freshman Tiger earned two Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week awards (April 7, April 28) to go along with her two national honors.
Currently, Finucane (21-6) has struck out 168 batters in 190.1 innings of work, holding opposing batters to .223 average.
On May 22, the list of 10 finalists will be trimmed to the final three. The inaugural NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year trophy will be presented during a live ceremony on May 27 prior to the opening of the WCWS.
Finucane, along with the rest of head coach Ehren Earleywine’s squad, will learn more about their postseason plans with the unveiling of the 2014 NCAA Division I Softball Championship bracket, which will be announced during a selection show airing on ESPNU on Sunday, May 11, at 9 p.m. CT. Mizzou has hosted five-straight NCAA regionals at University Field in a streak of seven-straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
