COLUMBIA, Mo. – Missouri pitcher Chelsea Thomas has accepted an invitation to try out for the 2011 USA Softball Women’s National Team, as announced Wednesday morning by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America.  Thomas will join 29 other athletes from around the country, including teammate Rhea Taylor, at the National Team Selection Camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., from June 12-17.

Thomas has helped lead the Tigers to a top-10 ranking nationally and their fifth straight 40-win season, as she’s put together a 23-4 record to go with the nation’s best earned run average at 0.72.  She’s fifth in the country with 11.4 strikeouts per seven innings and has 10 shutouts on the year, tied for 12th-most in all of Division I Softball.  Thomas has been part of three perfect games this season – two solo and one combined – and was named National Player of the Week by both USA Softball and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) in early March.  Thomas has taken home Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors five times this season.

The approximately 17 athletes selected to the USA Softball roster will compete in six different events in three countries. Fans in the United States will get four opportunities to see the team in action with three exhibition stops scheduled as well as the World Cup of Softball VI, July 21-25, in Oklahoma City. For ticket information on the World Cup as well as the tour stops in Plant City, Fla., Salem, Va. and Bowie, Md., go to www.usasoftball.com.
