Freshman P Tori Finucane
April 29, 2014
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Freshman pitcher Tori Finucane (Germantown, Md.) became the second player in Mizzou Softball history to sweep both major national player of the week awards on Tuesday, April 29, when she was selected as both the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week and the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week.
Finucane went 3-0 in the circle in three complete game efforts, striking out 21 batters over her 21.0 innings of work. She first shut out Missouri State on April 23, 5-0, with five strikeouts and three hits allowed before claiming two impressive victories at No. 3 Florida. Finucane helped the Tigers take the series-opener at UF with four hits allowed and three earned runs surrendered in the 5-3 win (April 25). She was back with more in the series finale on Sunday, April 27, striking out 10 Gators and scattering seven hits in the 5-4 victory.
"This honor means so much to me, but it should mean just as much to my great teammates here at Mizzou," Finucane said. "One person can't do it alone out there, and my teammates always have my back, which I truly appreciate. There is no possible way I could have reached this point without the support of my teammates and coaches. They are always there, helping and supporting me on and off the field. And we still have more work left to do this season, which is the most exciting part."
Her efforts at Florida helped head coach Ehren Earleywine's squad claim its fifth-straight SEC series win, improving the squad's record to 38-13 overall and 14-7 in conference action.
"Tori has had a great season, and this past weekend was just a continuation of what she has been doing all year," Earleywine said. "We are very proud of her, to say the least."
Finucane joins former ace pitcher Chelsea Thomas as the only two Tigers to take both national awards in the same week. Thomas received both honors on March 8, 2011, after an impressive week that saw the then-redshirt sophomore throw two perfect games out of three wins.
Finucane has earned two Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week awards (April 7, April 28) to go along with her two recent national honors.
