COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou softball team (26-7, 11-6 SEC) has been ranked 11th in the nation by both the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 and ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 polls, the organizations announced on Tuesday.
Mizzou finished a series win at then-No. 11 LSU on Sunday, April 21, with a 3-2 victory that was powered by senior 3B Nicole Hudson (Webb City, Mo.) and her two home runs. The two-run shot in the third inning and solo long ball in the fifth were all that was needed to top LSU. Mizzou previously took a 6-1 win in the series opener on Friday, April 19. Hudson batted 6-for-10 in the two wins.
Senior pitcher Chelsea Thomas earned Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday, April 22, for her efforts against LSU. In the Friday and Sunday wins, Thomas struck out 23 batters for a rate of 1.64 strikeouts per inning. She allowed just one batter to reach base by walk in the two victories. Thomas struck out 13 batters and allowed just two hits in Mizzou's initial 6-1 win on Friday before leading the Tigers to a 3-2 victory on Sunday, in which she fanned 10 batters and scattered five hits.
Mizzou is joined in the USA Today/NFCA poll by six SEC opponents: No. 2 Florida, No.3 Tennessee, No. 4 Alabama, No. 12 LSU, No. 15 Texas A&M and No. 19 Kentucky. The entire poll can be viewed here.
The Tigers reside in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll with eight fellow SEC schools: No. 2 Tennessee, No. 3 Florida, No. 6 Alabama, No. 12 LSU, No. 18 Texas A&M, No. 19 Kentucky, No. 23 Georgia and No. 25 Arkansas. The entire poll can be viewed here.
