Finucane Named Top 25 Finalist for National Freshman of the Year

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Freshman pitcher Tori Finucane (Germantown, Md.) has been named a Top 25 Finalist for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's inaugural Division I National Freshman of the Year trophy, which will be presented prior to te start of the 2014 NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Finucane has enjoyed an impressive first-year campaign for head coach Ehren Earleywine's squad, compiling a 1.86 ERA in 127.2 innings of work for a 14-5 record. The Tiger hurler has been impressive against some of the nation's best, leading Mizzou to shutout wins over No. 14 Arizona (2-0, Feb. 20) and No. 13 Texas A&M (7-0, March 7).

Finucane has six wins in Southeastern Conference play, which ranks fifth-best among all pitchers. She earned Mizzou's first SEC weekly award of the season, Pitcher of the Week, after striking out 16 in 14.0 innings at Mississippi State (April 4-5).

The NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award was created from an idea to honor outstanding athletic achievement among freshmen softball student-athletes throughout Division I. On May 8, the list will be trimmed down to the Top 10 finalists, while the Top 3 finalists will be selected and released on May 22. The inaugural NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year trophy will be presented during a live ceremony on May 27 prior to the opening of the annual WCWS.

The Tigers return home for more SEC action with Ole Miss from Friday, April 18-Saturday April 19. Mizzou and the Rebels play a doubleheader on Friday (5 p.m./7 p.m.), before a 2 p.m. series finale on Saturday.
