Erin Kalka Earns Big 12 Pitcher of the Week Honors

April 6, 2004

Columbia, Mo. - Missouri junior softball pitcher Erin Kalka was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week as announced by the Big 12 Conference Tuesday afternoon. Etching her name in the NCAA record book, the Chandler, Okla., native recorded 25 strikeouts in 14 innings of play in the Tigers' first game against Oklahoma State on Saturday at University Field. She tied for third on the All-Time NCAA Single Game Strikeout chart; the last person to throw 25 strikeouts in a single game was Nicole Mays of Florida Atlantic versus Stetson on May 4, 2001.

A school record for Missouri as well as a game-high for Kalka, 21 of the 25 batters she faced went down swinging. Carrying a no-hitter through nine innings, the right-handed pitcher gave up only three hits in 14 innings of action. After four hours and 13 minutes of play, the Tigers came out on top with a 3-2 win over the Cowgirls.

Kalka pitched six innings in game two, bringing her Oklahoma State series total to 20 innings pitched and 35 strikeouts. Kalka moved to fifth in the Missouri All-Time Career Strikeout chart (531). Kalka is three strikeouts shy of taking over the No. 4 spot currently held by 1991-1995 MU player Kacey Marshall. On the season, Kalka has 192 strikeouts, 10 away from her 2003 total of 202 that put her at ninth on the Missouri Season-Strikeout chart. 13-11 on the season, Kalka boasts a 1.91 ERA.

Kalka was last named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, April 8, 2003, for her 12th victory of the season and three-hit shutout over then No. 5 Texas.

The Missouri softball team will return to University Field Wednesday, April 7, at 6 p.m., against Border War Rival Kansas. The first home night game for the Tigers, it will be Missouri's fifth Big 12 Conference game of the 2004 season. Currently, Missouri is 4-0 in Conference play and stands second in the Big 12 Conference.
