Riding a four-game winning streak, the Missouri softball team plays host to the second annual Tiger Invitational at University Field beginning with a Friday, March 10, game against Mississippi Valley State at 4 p.m. (CST). The three-day tournament features teams from Missouri, Mississippi Valley State and Drake. Each team will play four games throughout the tournament.
Missouri is a combined 17-4 all-time against the Drake Bulldogs (17-3) and Mississippi Valley State Devilettes (0-1). The Tigers last swept Drake in a three-game home series March 12-13, 2005 and last lost to the Bulldogs, 3-0, in 2002. Missouri enters the tournament on a seven game win streak over Drake.
The Tigers and Devilettes have met only once in the 31 year history of Missouri's softball program. Playing at the 2004 NCAA Regional Tournament in Los Angeles, Mississippi Valley State came back from a two-run deficit in the sixth inning to win the game, 4-3, and advance in the tournament.
Friday night's game marks Missouri's third home game of the season. The Tigers are 12-3 in the past 15 home games, including four games in which Missouri hosted an NCAA Regional Tournament.
Head Coach Ty Singleton and his Tiger squad went 4-0 at last season's Tiger Invitational. Playing teams from Louisiana Tech and UMKC, Missouri won the tournament title and outscored their opponents 35-2, allowing only one run in each game to Louisiana Tech, March 19 and 20.
The Tigers will take the field Friday night with a .263 batting average, however redshirt sophomore Micaela Minner leads the team with a .340 average that includes five doubles, four home runs and 19 RBI.
Looking Ahead: Next up for the Tigers, Missouri will host a doubleheader with the University of Northern Iowa, Wednesday, March 15, beginning at 4 p.m. (CST).
