COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou softball team (9-1) was ranked sixth in the country by both the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 and USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 polls, the organizations announced on Tuesday.
Missouri went 3-0 in its games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic (Feb. 21-22) in Palm Springs, Calif., including an exciting 4-3 win in 12 innings over new Southeastern Conference foe Florida (Feb. 22). The now-fourth-ranked Gators were stifled by the strong pitching of two-time All-American Chelsea Thomas (Pleasantville, Iowa), who went the distance (12.0 IP) for the win, struck out a career-high 19 batters and surrendered zero earned runs.
Fellow senior Nicole Hudson (Webb City, Mo.) batted 2-for-4 in the game and recorded two pivotal RBI, including the game-winning single in the bottom of the 12th to score junior Mackenzie Sykes (Blue Springs, Mo.). The Tigers prefaced their victory over the Gators with two wins on Feb. 21: Maryland in five innings (13-1) and San Diego State by a score of 2-1.
Mizzou ended its West Coast trip by splitting a doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton (Feb. 23), dropping to the Titans, 5-4, in the first game before winning 7-0 in the second.
The Tigers continue at the All-Missouri Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament (Friday, March 1-Sunday, March 3) in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Located on the campus of Southeast Missouri (SEMO), Mizzou opens the tournament with the host Redhawks (2 p.m.) and St. Louis (4 p.m.) on Friday, March 1. The Tigers face Missouri State on Saturday, March 2 at 4 p.m. before finishing with UMKC on Sunday, March 3 at Noon.
Mizzou begins SEC play in its home-opening series against Texas A&M from March 8-10. Mizzou softball fans are reminded that 2013 season tickets are on sale. More information is available here.
