BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Mizzou softball senior Chelsea Thomas (Pleasantville, Iowa) was named Southeastern Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. The conference honor is Thomas' second of Missouri's inaugural season in the SEC and the 14th of her career.
The two-time All-American Thomas completed an outstanding performance in Mizzou's 4-3, 12-inning victory over No. 5/5 Florida on Feb. 22 at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., striking out 19 Gators while going the distance. Thomas was still on her game late in the extra innings affair, recording two strikeouts and forcing a groundout in the top of the 12th inning to give the Tigers their opportunity to take the win.
Thomas pitched 2.0 innings one day earlier against Maryland (Feb. 21) but left the game due to a bout with food poisoning that lasted the remainder of the day.
For the season, Thomas has made four starts and appearances for a 3-0 record. Her 0.25 ERA currently leads the SEC, while she ranks second in opposing batting average (.115) and total hits allowed (11).
Mizzou continues on the road at the Missouri Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament (March 1-3) in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Located on the campus of Southeast Missouri (SEMO), Mizzou opens the tournament with the host Redhawks (2 p.m.) and St. Louis (4 p.m.) on Friday, March 1. The Tigers face Missouri State on Saturday, March 2 at 4 p.m. before finishing with UMKC on Sunday, March 3 at Noon.
