COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou softball team (5-0) was ranked seventh in the country by both the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 and USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 polls, the organizations announced on Tuesday.
The Tigers started a pristine 5-0 at UCSB's Gaucho Classic (Feb. 15-17), beginning with an 11-3 win over UCSB in five innings before defeating Fresno State by a score of 4-0. In the victory over the Bulldogs, senior pitcher Chelsea Thomas (Pleasantville, Iowa) only allowed two hits and struck out nine.
In Day Two action (Feb. 16), Missouri turned away Fresno State again by way of an 11-3 win in five innings and also won 5-0 over San Diego. The Tigers finished the event with a 12-1 triumph over UCSB on Feb. 17. Mizzou hit .374 over its five wins in the event and blasted 15 home runs out of UCSB's Campus Diamond.
Senior 3B Nicole Hudson (Webb City, Mo.) led the way for Missouri, hitting five long balls. Sophomore SS Corrin Genovese (East Amherst, N.Y.) has batted .636 in four starts at shortstop, additionally posting a .692 on-base percentage. Senior 1B Lindsey Muller (Stilwell, Kan.) has hit a perfect 5-for-5 in two appearances thus far in 2013, hitting one home run and four singles.
Mizzou continues its West Coast trip with the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., from Thursday, Feb. 21 - Friday, Feb. 22. The Tigers will face Maryland (3 p.m. CT) and San Diego State (7:30 p.m.) in the first day of competition before matching up with Florida on Friday at 12:30 p.m. The Tigers finish in California with a double-header at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Feb. 23 (4 p.m. / 6 p.m.).
