Feb. 17, 2009

Columbia, Mo. - Missouri sophomore Rhea Taylor (Buford, Ga.) was awarded Big 12 Softball Player of the Week honors as announced today by the league office. The weekly accolade is the third of her two-year Tiger career and Missouri's first of the 2009 campaign.

Taylor went 6-for-11 at the plate and contributed seven of her team's 20 runs at the Georgia State First Pitch Classic in Atlanta, Ga. Batting in the leadoff position, the All-America outfielder opened the season by scoring three runs in consecutive contests against Evansville and Virginia Tech. Her performance helped Missouri to a 3-0 record for the first time in four years. Taylor recorded a team-best 1.091 slugging percentage after reaching base 12 times. The sophomore also knocked a double, triple and hit her third-career homerun on the weekend.

The Tigers return to action Friday, Feb. 20, at the Strike-Out Cancer Tournament hosted by Florida Atlantic in Boca, Raton, Fla. Missouri will take on teams from FIU, Florida Atlantic, Arkansas and Providence over the three-day period. Taylor and the Tigers will then return to Columbia and host a home opening doubleheader Wednesday, Feb. 25, beginning at 3 p.m.
