Mizzou is coming off their third consecutive appearance at the Women's College World Series and were picked to repeat as Big 12 Champions in 2012, according to the coaches' poll that was released on Wednesday. Head coach Ehren Earleywine was named Big 12 Coach of the Year for the second time in his career after leading Mizzou to a No. 6 ranking in the final polls in 2011, their highest finish ever. The Tigers return two 2011 All-Americans in senior Ashley Fleming and redshirt junior Chelsea Thomas, along with All-Big 12 honorees Nicole Hudson and Jenna Marston.
Last season, Fleming led the Tigers in batting average (.356), doubles (16), home runs (14), runs batted in (62), slugging percentage (.701) and on base percentage (.452). She also had 26 walks to just 17 strikeouts and was a perfect 16-for-16 in stolen bases. Thomas was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and was one of three finalists for USA Softball's Player of the Year award after leading the nation with a 0.95 earned run average. She posted a record of 32-8 and struck out 397 batters while walking just 53.
Missouri is scheduled to host 24 home games this season, beginning with the DeMarini Invitational on March 9-11. In Big 12 action, the Tigers will host three-game sets against Kansas, Baylor, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. All game times, dates and opponents are subject to change.
