CURACAO - The University of Missouri softball ended day two of its trip the island country of Curacao (in the Netherlands Antilles) with a tough loss to the Netherlands Antilles National Team, 7-6, on Friday. Mizzou arrived on the island Thursday afternoon and will continue to play and practice throughout the next five days. Head coach Jay Miller said he is very excited about the way the team has responded to the culture and the concept of the trip.

"This has been and will be a very good experience for us," said Miller. "The team has handled everything very well so far and seems to be embracing what we are trying to accomplish as we prepare for our season."

The Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Friday. Freshman Erin Kalka pitched three shutout innings while allowing only two hits. However, junior Ingrid Werner would give up five run (two unearned) in one inning of work. The Tigers rallied to the tie the game, 6-6, in the sixth inning but the Netherlands Antilles National Team manufactured the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for the 7-6 victory.

Several Tigers had quality offensive nights. Junior Sarah Vassmer went 3-for-4 while sophomore Rachael McGinnis and freshman Heather Kunkel each recorded two hits. Kunkel also scored twice.

This game was the first of four contests the Tigers will play during the trip. Missouri played in front of 500 rowdy fans. The matchup was broadcast on a local radio station and featured a customary postgame concert. During much of the game, the atmosphere was filled with music, loud chanting and constant chatter. The people of Curacao have given Mizzou a warm welcome. Curacao is located just north of Venezuela.
