Jenna Marston picked up her 16th multi-hit game of the season on Sunday
May 2, 2010
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The No. 10 Missouri Tigers (41-9, 9-6 Big 12) closed out the home portion of their regular season schedule with another victory, as they defeated the Baylor Bears (26-22, 6-11 Big 12) by an 11-6 final. Mizzou finishes the regular season with a 26-3 record at home.
Missouri scored seven times in the fourth and fifth innings combined to separate themselves from the Lady Bears. Kristin Nottelmann improved to 16-6 overall with the win after allowing one earned run in 4.2 innings. The sophomore scattered five hits, walked just one and struck out four.
The Tigers jumped out on top in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs. Junior Rhea Taylor extended her hitting streak to 16 games with a leadoff single, and stole one of her two bases on the day. Catherine Lee was walked and Jenna Marston was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Ashley Fleming lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Taylor, making it 1-0. After an intentional walk to Nicole Hudson, Shana White ripped a line drive into center field to bring home Lee.
Baylor tied it up in the third with a one out double, followed by an RBI single, and a throwing error later in the inning to even the score at two apiece.
Missouri was able to regain the lead in the bottom half of the inning with another pair of runs. Marston got things going with a single to center, while Fleming followed with a walk. Two batters later, Hudson ripped a single up the middle to score a run. White followed with a groundout to plate Fleming for her second RBI of the game.
Another unearned run in the top of the fourth for Baylor cut the Tiger lead to 4-3, but a four run bottom of the fourth blew the game wide open for Missouri, highlighted by a pair of two run home runs. With one out, Catherine Lee blasted her sixth home run of the year, scoring Gina Schneider who walked to start the inning. After Marston doubled into the gap, Fleming homered to left center for her eighth of the season, putting Mizzou up 8-3.
The Tigers added three more in the fifth to push their lead to 11-4. Marston picked up her third hit of the day, a two-run single through the right side to score Taylor and Abby Vock. Megan Christopher, who walked earlier in the inning, scored the third run of the frame on a wild pitch.
A two-run home run in the seventh by Baylor made it 11-6.
Marston finished the day 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs. Fleming went 1-for-2 at the plate with a pair of runs and three RBI. Lee also went 1-for-2, scoring twice and bringing home two.
The Tigers enter their final week of regular season play, beginning Wednesday with a doubleheader in Macomb, Ill., against Western Illinois. Stay tuned to mutigers.com for more information.
